Bourke artist Merren Turnbull takes home art prize
A capacity crowd attended the opening night of Art Unlimited at Dunedoo on Friday, 20th of May, to applaud the winners and admire the 200 entries from artists, photographers, and ceramicists from across Australia.
Merren Turnbull’s ‘Run for Your Money’ was chosen by judge Lizzy Galloway, the Gallery Curator of the Mudgee Art Precinct, out of 200 entries for the ABC Western Plains Prize, as it best depicted the western region.
“This is a lovely depiction of a spectacular outback Australian sunset,” Lizzy Galloway observed of Merren’s painting.
“The artist has competently used the pastels to create the beautiful colours of an enormous sky which dwarfs the foreground goats as they’re urgently herded into the livestock truck.”
Merren said that she couldn’t believe it when she got the award.
“There were so many beautiful paintings on display,” she said, “I was shocked when I heard I’d won.
“My painting depicts a truck loading goats at the break of day with a stunning sunrise in the background.
