Ark wanted at Walgett!
Rata Jackson
Mary Casey Marshall lives on a property 30kms west of Walgett on the Brewon Road and has not left her property for six weeks with back-to-back floods since September.
On the weekend, Mary spoke to Western Herald while waiting for the helicopter to drop her a food parcel. “What I need is an ark,” Mary joked (or did she?).
The Barwon River at Walgett peaked at 13.37 metres on Sunday, slightly lower than the 2012 peak of 13.58m and lower than the expected peak of 13.6m. However the Bureau of Meteorology is expecting the Barwon at Walgett to remain above the major flood level of 12.5m until mid to late November.
Mary is alone on the property as her family members are away working and studying. She is also waiting for sandbags to protect her daughter’s house located on the property.
“The water is getting close,” Mary said, “But there is plenty to do, and I am busy most of the time. I try not to let it get to me”.
Family and friends call Mary frequently to keep her morale up, and she has a positive attitude about the isolation.
