A picture of reconciliation and respect

Adorning the walls of Towers Drug Company in the main street are two newly painted murals revealing the story of respect and reconciliation in Bourke.

The mural is a project three years in the making and the idea came to local pharmacist Peter Crothers from two unrelated thoughts.

The first was that he had two ugly blank spaces in the pharmacy that he didn’t know what to do with and to simply paint them was boring. The other was to make the pharmacy a more welcoming, place for Aboriginal people.

Peter decided to incorporate a mural that was to be an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ which depicted Bourke as a town that lived a day-to-day, practical reconciliation.

“Through the mural I wanted to achieve three main things,” he said.

“Firstly, that the pharmacy welcomed and respected Aboriginal people and their connection to the land we live on.
