Bourke recycling passes a milestone

The Bourke Laundry recycling project has been a roaring success with more than one million items recycled, returning more than $110,000 to the community.

Bourke Laundry Manager Judi Lucas said the recycling centre had been a bigger success than anyone had thought when it was launched more than a year ago.

“We have sent away 33 containers in total with over one million (1,100,131) items for recycling equating to $110,113.00,” Judi said.

“It’s just going so well, and the community is getting used to how they have to bring their products down here - it’s getting better and better each week.

“This financial year alone we have sent away 21 containers.”

But there are requirements for how items need to be recycled.

“People have to make sure the items are clean, with nothing inside them, and the bar codes still on them. There is a maximum number of 200 bottles per box because of the weight – but we explain how to do it.

“The recycling company gives us big bags to pack everything in but if people want to come down and get them and then count the items in themselves they can – we’ll check it, but we’ve found most people are pretty honest.
