With aching bones, eyes and muscles, Bourke Chef Shayne Barwick battled fatigue as he attempted his gruelling world record attempt - playing the longest game of pool in history. Shayne was aiming for 106 hours of sinking pool balls, but after 79 hours the heart was willing but the body wasn’t. Shayne had to call it quits. Port of Bourke manager Luke Moon had nothing but praise for the exhausted Shayne.

“Unfortunately, Shayne had to retire from the attempt at the world record early on Sunday morning due to his body shutting down,” Luke said.

“He would like to thank everybody who supported him through the 79 hours he achieved. From Shayne, staff and management at the Port of Bourke Hotel we would like to thank everybody for their support.”

While Shayne may feel he failed, the Bourke community has rallied to support his effort to raise money for people struggling financially through the drought. Despite his marathon effort, he was back on deck in the kitchen by Tuesday night. Items donated for the auction may be given to the Bourke Outback Trek to be auctioned later this year as part of their fund raising efforts for the Rural Fire Service.
