Young Bourke people are being encouraged to consider Fire and Rescue NSW as a career opportunity, following the visit to the town by Deputy Commissioner of Fire and Rescue NSW Jeremy Fewtrell.

Mr Fewtrell said the service offered a great career path, particularly for young indigenous men and women, who were taken through specialist training to give them an advantage during the selection process.

“The Indigenous Fire and Rescue Employment Strategy has been very successful,” Deputy Commissioner Fewtrell said.

“There is a career path there for indigenous people and we want them.

“Some of our top recruits have been graduates of that program and come from out in the western region.

“As well as encouraging indigenous people to consider the emergency services as a career path, we are also facing challenges ahead as technology changes the way we work – it’s a very exciting time for all emergency services.
