It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas all over the outback. And the festive spirit is well and truly alive in Bourke with a Christmas lights competition, Christmas twilight markets and Carols by Candlelight just part of the festivities.

The “Light Up the Night” competition will add extra incentive to residents to decorate their homes, building on the enthusiasm Bourke has shown in the past to ‘deck the halls’ with fairy lights and Christmas decorations.

This year, there are prizes for various category winners in the Christmas lights competition, with the judging to begin after the Twilight Markets on Friday, December 14.

Tourism Publicity Officer Jodie Sontag said the competition is open to anyone and she is confident the community will get involved in the campaign to bring the festive spirit alive.

“We are really excited about the competition because we know how much people in Bourke love to light up their homes at this time of the year,” she said.

“It’s a great way to bring the community together.

“Then we have the Twilight markets to lead into the Carols by Candlelight down at the Wharf which will be a beautiful event, with support and participation from the schools, the Bourke Choir and the churches.

“The markets will have food, wine tasting, loads of gift stalls so you can do your Christmas shopping and the chance to catch up with everyone and come together as a community.

“We have a very special event to launch the “Light Up the Night” competition at the Twilight Markets and Carols event, when Mayor Barry Hollman flicks the switch on the Bourke Christmas tree.

“That’s going to be a bit of a surprise for everyone because we haven’t done this before, but there’ll be a huge tree down at the wharf which will look spectacular when the Mayor turns on the lights.

“That’s when the judging starts for the competition and people can put their entries in right up until the final deadline.

“It’s an exciting way to bring the Christmas spirit to Bourke” Jodie said.
