Bourke farewells a favourite daughter

The Bourke community gathered at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Friday to say farewell to one of Bourke’s most well-known and well-loved citizens – Mrs Doreen Suckling.

She entered the world as Doreen May Hunt on 4th September 1924 at Broken Hill.

Doreen was the first daughter to William and May Hunt and a little sister to Roy. She was followed by Harold, Beulah, Eric, Rachel, Teddy (who passed away aged 11 months old), Cyril and Coral.

She spent her early years around White Cliffs, Tibooburra and Wanaaring and did her schooling at Wanaaring. She then went to work on various properties around the Wanaaring area for a short time, before moving to Bourke and working at Old Durham Hospital and The Central Hotel.

Doreen was the only Hunt child that didn’t give her mother any trouble; and was always very obedient and very loyal to her. Nana May Hunt moved into Bourke to open a boarding house where Doreen lived up until she married Eddie Suckling at the age of 27.
